Whether you have been in your home for a long time, you are just moving in, or you are getting ready to put it on the market chances are your cabinets could use some love. Our expert cabinet refinishing in Fredericksburg guide you through the process.
Begin at the Beginning
You are going to need access to all the hardware, grooves and crevices for this project, so let’s start by taking off the cabinet doors. This will give you access to the inside and outside portion of the cabinet and ensure a smooth paint job. You should store the cabinets flat on a tarp in a well-ventilated area, so they dry evenly once painted.
Time to Tape
Take your time and do it right. Tape off those cabinets that couldn’t be removed, you can even use a ruler or yard stick to help your accuracy. You can use paper or drop clothes to cover large surface areas like the floor, counters and furniture. Your goals here is to do your best, tape off the areas you don’t want to paint to ensure a high-quality finish.
Clean Your Cabinets Before You Paint
You can start with a simple soap and water mix scrubbing away the surface dirt. You may want to use a scrub brush, one of those abrasive pads you can find at your local store. Once the area is clean you should use the scrub brush again to give the wood some grip for the paint to adhere to. Wait until all surfaces are dry to move on to the next step.
Expert Tips:
Use a straight razor to clean up the edges. Don’t go to deep into the wood
A wire brush can help you tackle those hard to reach places.
To Spray or Brush Your Cabinets
Our experts have found that spraying your cabinets while they are on a tarp in a well-ventilated area is a great solution. For those harder to reach areas inside the cabinets you may consider brushing the paint on. Be mindful of dust and bugs as you paint, make sure your paint doesn’t have anything in it while it dries.
Painting the Actual Doors
Give yourself and the cabinets plenty of room so you can walk around each door, a couple tarps are a great solution. What color have you decided on? Are you just updating the wood-stained finish or are you thinking about a mix of white and chalkboard paint? Now is your chance to add value to you home. Be sure to wait for each section to completely dry, the average duration is about 24 hours.
Putting your Kitchen Back Together
Paint can take between 7-10 days to fully dry but after 24 hours you should be good to install them in your kitchen. It is encouraged that you clean the hardware too so that the finished product looks its best. Follow instructions on how to clean the hardware based on the type of metal it is.
Now stand back and enjoy your updated cabinets.
