How to Remove Green Algae from Vinyl Siding

Posted on November 20, 2019

In order to keep your home looking its best, it’s important to keep your eye out for any signs of damage or just dirtiness. Vinyl siding eventually begins to accumulate dirt which can be quickly taken care of with some water and soap. However, if you begin to see green stains on your home’s vinyl siding, you may need to take more measures in order to assure your house is in its best condition.

People choose vinyl siding because of its strength and ability to withstand wear and tear from outside factors such as the weather. If it starts to turn green this means that there is probably mold or algae. Mold is commonly found if there is a water leak or there is a bad drainage system in place. If you find mold it can be very hard to remove and will require chemicals. If it still isn’t coming off, consider assistance from a professional.

On the other hand, algae is caused by a collection of dirt or dust. Algae may be green or brown in color. Algae is easier to remove than mold and shouldn’t take too much effort to remove off of your vinyl siding.

In order to remove Algae from your vinyl siding you will need duct tape, plastic sheeting, a bucket, hose, bleach, scrub brush, and gloves. Next, tape electrical outlets, vents, etc with duct tape. Also, make sure all your doors and windows are closed. Make your cleaning solution by mixing water and bleach powder. Make sure you test a small area first before putting the solution all over the siding. Lastly, start scrubbing! Start at the top and go down. Apply a lot of force and move side to side.
