How to Paint Vinyl Siding

Posted on May 8, 2020

Sheds can take as much beating over the winter as our homes do. If you have a vinyl shed in your backyard, you might be wondering how to refresh and update it. Take on a weekend shed makeover. Here’s how to paint vinyl siding.

Whether you gained a shed when you purchased your home or you made the decision to add it, it’s a great place to stash your garden tools and extra seating. Just because it’s utilitarian, doesn’t mean it has to look that way.

Working with a vinyl shed and paint can be difficult but it can be done. Following just a few steps will change the look of your shed from an afterthought to a stylish choice. Choose colors that are found around your property, in flowers, paint and naturally. This will make the scheme make sense. After you have your color choices, start here.

Protect

Before you start working with detergents and paints, protect any grass and plants that are around the shed. Overspray and runoff are real problems and can harm the foliage around the shed. Use cardboard or plastic sheeting and tape the edges. This will whisk the chemicals away from your immediate vicinity.

Clean

You cannot paint anything while it’s covered in dust and grime. Don’t skip or skimp on this step, your finished product will show it. Use some liquid dish soap and water with a soft bristled brush to scrub the shed. Rinse completely and let it dry.

Choose Paint

When you visit the home improvement or paint store, be sure to shop for paint that will work on vinyl siding. The best method is to use an adhesive primer with a high quality acrylic paint. As far as colors, it’s up to your taste. Also check with any governing bodies that may have a say as to colors.

Paint the Shed

Use the primer and paint a layer on to the shed. Allow time for the primer to dry. Once it’s completely dry, move on to the paint. Apply a second or even third coat after a couple of hours of dry time. Add coatings until you are happy with the color.

Add Decor

Create an ambiance for the shed with garden items around it. Decorate the shed with accessories. This step creates the feeling the shed was planned for and not just tossed in the yard to store stuff.
