Turn your patio from shabby to chic with a little bit of elbow grease and a few hours. Bring your backyard back to life with these 5 tricks to rejuvenate a run-down patio – on a budget!

Whether you want to sip cocktails before dinner or relax with a book, a patio remodel is in order.

Stop Pests

It can be increasingly difficult to enjoy a patio that is messy compliments of wind debris or creepy crawlies. Decorate your decor immediately outside of your patio with pine cones. Replace areas that you would much with them. The spiny sides will encourage critters to go elsewhere. They crusty cones decompose slowly saving you time and money. They have an added benefit in that plants love the acid they put in the soil. It’s a win-win!

Color the Concrete

Make an oasis out of a blanket of gray. A bold, bright color or a painted design like a stenciled rug give an upscale feel to a concrete patio. There are paints made specifically to mimic the look of fancy stones or bricks. Have kids? Paint an oversized game board down for hours of fun.

Remove Rust

Rusty furniture makes any patio look rundown and tired. Don’t feel like you need to buy new. Remove rust with a bit of elbow grease. Use a wire brush or steel wool to scrub away the rust. Make it quicker by using a drill with a wire brush attachment. For really rusty jobs, try an acidic remover like vinegar or Rust-Oleum. Get some fun paints and give the furniture a new coat. Your porch will look like new.

Secure some Storage

Patios are an easy dumping ground for discarded tools, pots and folding chairs. Part of making your backyard more appealing is making it less messy. Go through the various items stowed on your patio and make the decision to dump them if they are just taking up space. If you want to keep them, create a storage space out of eye sight. Use your thrift and garage skills to commandeer some storage items for your stuff. Go crazy with paint and decor to make it part of your patio, not an afterthought.

Light it Up

Adding a fun feature like a fire pit creates a new reason to get outside. Create a homemade fire pit with just some pavers. They can be gathered inexpensively from your local home improvement store. You’ll need to purchase bricks that are heat-resistant pavers, also known as fire bricks. They generally run about $5 a brick. Stack two layers in a small circle – about 6 bricks around. Be sure your patio is made of fire safe substances – no wooden decks here! Grab some marshmallows and get to s’mores!
