Staining Your Mountain Home

Posted on August 21, 2020

Painting isn’t the only way to give your house a facelift. If the outside of your mountain home is looking a little drab, or you’re looking to extend the life of its exterior, you may be looking at a house staining project in your future.

Will staining work for you?

Stain can be applied to just about any kind of surface, and you’re only limited in your options depending on the look you’re going for. Everything from wood siding, brick, stucco, concrete, stone, and more can receive the aesthetic and preserving benefits of staining.

Knowing your options

As far as tints and coloration go, your options run the gamut from transparent, semi-transparent, semi-solid, solid body, and everything in between. These alternatives differ in opacity and coverage, and are generally distinguished by the amount of pigmentation, or body, of the stain.

While both solid and transparent stain can be made from similar ingredients, including pigments, transparent stain will generally be much thinner than solid stain. On wood, for example, transparent stains are made to soak into the surface you’re finishing, whereas solid stains simply sit on wood surfaces and produce a thin film of protection.

How often should you stain?

Needless to say, every house is different. Aside from the environmental factors, the need to reapply stain will greatly depend on the quality of the materials used and skillful methods used to apply it. For good maintenance, a rule of thumb is one coat every three years for a semi-transparent stain, and every 5 years for a solid body stain.

These time frames can change, however, depending on the degradation caused by the sun, rain, or snow, or whether you’re looking to change the color of your home. Consultation from an expert may help you gauge a more accurate estimate.

Why should you do it?

Opting to stain the exterior of your home can highlight the natural beauty of certain wood grains and stones, and showcase a more rugged, laid back approach to design. Aside from enhancing the architecture, staining your home protects it from the elements. For instance, water-based stains excel in protecting your home’s exterior from the sun’s rays, an important consideration if your home does not have sufficient tree cover to shield it. A professionally furnished stain simply protects your exteriors, and lengthens the quality and durability of its components.
