When it comes time to paint the exterior of your home, you probably don’t consider painting your windows. However, painting your windows can take your home to a whole new level. Taking on this task on your own will require a special amount of care and knowledge. While we suggest working with the professionals for any window frame painting needs, we want you to have the best results possible. In this article, we have compiled our top three window frame painting tips and tricks. Once you’ve read through this page, you’ll be armed with what you need for a successful paint job. Let’s dive in!

Take Care of the Paint Before You Paint

As with any paint project, preparation is essential. Window painting is no different. The first thing you’ll want to do before pulling out any paint is make sure the surface is primed and prepped. This mainly includes removing old paint currently on your windows and filling any holes with putty. To get a clean surface, pull a putty knife along the surface and then use your finger to smooth smaller imperfections. Make sure you let everything dry completely before moving onto the next step of the process.

Use the Right Paint for the Job

While you’re waiting for your putty to dry, you can work on acquiring the paint for your job. For exterior paint jobs, you’ll likely want to find a paint with a glossy finish. These paints are easier to wipe clean and are better at repelling dirt. The material your house is made out of will ultimately decide what type of paint you need. For example, you should use either acrylic or oil paint on the wood exterior of your home. If you have a vinyl siding home, though, you’ll need something more specific.

Paint the Casing and the Sashes Contrasting Colors

Once you get to the actual painting of your project, you’ll want to be sure you’re painting in the right spots. The best results for window painting come from painting the entire window casing one color and the window sashes another contrasting color. The casing being the stationary frame that holds the window sash and the sah being the part of the window that moves up and down. The common mistake here is painting the interior of the casing the same as the sash. While this won’t do any damage, it will make the windows of your home look weaker and less eloquent.
