Why Your Fall Home Maintenance Checklist Should Include Exterior Painting
Posted on September 28, 2019
Let the fall temperatures set in, and that means it’s time for your annual once over of your home. It’s a good idea to take a walk around your exterior and get it ready for the chilly air that will soon be moving in. Here’s why your fall home maintenance checklist should include exterior painting.
Mold and Mildew
Nothing good comes out of cold, dark areas: mostly mildew and mold. If you have areas of discoloration or growth on the exterior of your home, it’s time to clean it up. Use a trisodium phosphate and brush to scrub the area. Use a hose to rinse the area clean. It could be time to think about a full house painting if the damage is too great.
Dirt
Right along with mold and mildew, a fair amount of dirt and grime can find a home on your house. From summer rain and wind, the exterior of your home can seem a bit run down. While they are not intrusive or destructive, it still gives your house an unkempt and unsightly look. Before the snow and ice come in for winter, take an afternoon and power wash the outside of your house. It will make the walls looks so much fresher, come spring.
Weather damage: If parts of your home’s exterior are bare and exposed to the elements, this could cause extensive damage once winter weather hits. Repainting and making repairs protects your home’s exterior, and should be at the top of your list.
Repairs
Before the winter sets in, consider repairing any deficiencies in your home’s exterior. This will prevent cold and wet intrusion into your structure and protect your home. Take an afternoon and scrub mildew and mold away, caulk around windows, and repair cracks in stucco. Allowing water the opportunity to get into cracks and crevices could allow time for it to fester all winter. When the ice thaws in spring, you could be looking at costly repairs.
