The following are the questions we receive the most about our house painting services.

Is oil paint or latex paint better?

Even though oil paint has traditionally been chosen as the superior type of paint, it is starting to lose its popularity status because of the chemicals in it. It’s also because other types of paint have increase in quality making them a better choice. An example of this is the technological advancements made to 100% acrylic resin latex paint. Many residents in Calgary have used this type of paint for their homes and are quite pleased with the results.

What do you do before painting a house?

Every customer has an idea of what they want for their project and that means what they need to do to prepare for it differs. Even so, there are some preparation tasks that nearly all painting projects need.

  • Clean –   All surfaces being painted need to be clean and dry, so the paint adheres to them correctly.
  • Scrape –  Anything that is to be painted must be free from debris. Using a scraper or wire brush is the best way to remove loose pieces.
  • Sand   – Sanding all areas isn’t always needed. This is why it’s important to consult with an experienced painter to achieve good looking paint results.
  • Prepare Windows – Windows with putty holding the glass in place should be prepared as well by removing loose putty, creating smooth edges.
  • Putty   – Dents, dings, and divets should be filled in and sanded smooth.
  • Caulk and Seal  –  This is for gaps, cracks and crevices. It can be used in siding, and around doors and windows. Many types of caulks and sealers exist, so it’s important to use the right types for the surface. The painters of CertaPro Painters® of Calgary North have a lot of experience choosing the right types and using them in a skilled way to prepare surfaces for paint.

Does old paint need to be removed before painting?

It is not necessary to remove old paint before painting. However, it is important to remove loose, peeling, cracking or degraded paint.

What is a “paint system”?

This is a combination of sealers, primers and paints that CertaPro Painters® has developed to work together to deliver quality results. Proposals may include this if it’s appropriate for the painting project.

Do you have to use paint primer?

Primers prep areas for paint. It make the surface much more accepting of the paint, and then can create long lasting, beautiful results. Many painted surfaces do not need primer because the new paint will adhere to it.

While many painted surfaces do not need primer, there are times when it’s a good idea. If a drastic colour change is desired, primer can create a base for the new paint colour.

How many coats of paint should you use for a good looking paint job?

The number of coats of paint depends on how well the surface was prepared and if the new colour is quite different from the existing one. Surfaces that are simply repainted with the same color should only require one coat. Surfaces that are receiving a drastic colour change will need more than one coat, and the number of coats depends on how well the surface was primed.

How long does it take the new paint to dry?

Latex paints set quickly between 30 to 120 minutes. It may take up to 30 days for it to fully cure, though. This is why we always recommend that people open and close their newly painted windows and doors regularly for about a month.

How long does paint last?

How long paint lasts depends on many factors. The type of paint, quality of paint, and how well the surface was prepared all affect the longevity of the paint. Interior and exterior paint jobs can easily last for at least 5 years.

Is it possible to make a paint job last longer?

To increase the longevity of a paint job, be sure to use quality paint and prepare the surface properly. Refrain from using a pressure washer too often or rubbing the walls as you clean them.

Is it possible to save money by buying the painting supplies and have the professional painter do the actual painting?

This probably wouldn’t be beneficial. Painters receive discounts on painting supplies, and that savings is passed along to the customer in the estimate.

Is there a difference between hand brushed and spraying?

There isn’t a difference in the quality of the results. Hand brushing and spraying will look the same. As long as the areas are prepped appropriately and skilled painter paints them, the results will look good.
