Industrial Gas Flare Tower Painting Project in Boulder, Colorado
This decommissioned industrial gas flare at a waste facility needed extensive repair, preparation and painting. CertaPro Painters of Boulder and Longmont was called to paint and revamp this 60-foot tall tower. The team is experienced with big industrial painting projects and have the tools, equipment and crew to handle these type of painting projects – of all sizes.
CHALLENGES:
CHALLENGES:Because it was decommissioned, the structure had been exposed to the elements for a long time without much surface maintenance.
With extensive rust throughout, our team spent a lot of time removing it with wire brushes by hand and grinders.
CONDITIONS:
- Recoating exterior surfaces of an industrial gas flare at a waste management campus.
- Significant rust on surface from lack of maintenance coatings.
- This is a very technical project, requiring significant skill and experience to avoid flashing while coating the cylindrical tower over 50 feet in height while using a paint with sheen.
PROJECT INVOLVEMENT:
- Wire Brushing – Completed extensive hand preparation and wire brushing to prepare rusted areas.
- Metal Primer – Protective and Marine Grade metal primer used to provide a corrosion resistant barrier coating, followed with an Industrial Grade finish coating.
- Heavy Application to Provide Full Coverage – Converted color from green to off-white. No flashing in finish coat despite using higher sheen to provide added protection.
- Utilized 60’ Articulating Boom Lift – Properly followed all OSHA safety protocol.

BEFORE PHOTOS
Before the project began we did an assessment of the building. Extensive preparation and painting of the full exterior of the gas flare was needed.
Extensive Rust
With extensive rust throughout, it was starting to degrade and devalued the homes in the general area.
WORK IN PROGRESS
Due to the large size of the building and it’s difficult to reach surfaces, extension ladders and a lift were used to get crew members safely into a position where they could make repairs and paint surfaces.
THE FINAL RESULTS
After completion, we made sure that all concerns were addressed from requests made at the start of the project. The painting came out nicely and the neighboring properties and residents were delighted.
