Determining what colors to use for your exterior painting project can be daunting, but if done right you your results will be beautiful and last for at least a decade. The new coat of paint makes a huge difference and will enhance the value and perception of your home by leaps and bounds. Consider how the paint will tie into the other static elements of your house. How will your colors complement your roofing, stonework, and landscaping? This are things that you will want to fit well with your colors.
Consider the style and architecture. What colors thematically make sense for the layout of your house? Where is your house located? Are you near the beach or in the mountains? Good stylistic choices will be reflected by your environment. Are you surrounded by trees? Do you get a lot of sun? More light will bring out the color. You want to choose colors that will unify your environment and surroundings.
What are your neighbors doing? You may want to consider how your house will tie into your neighborhood as well. It can certainly help to give you ideas and think about a general theme that would be a good fit given your surroundings.
There’s no need to go overboard. Sticking to two to four colors is generally a good rule of thumb. Think about what you want your primary wall color to be and go from there. Once you know that it will be much easier to consider what will complement, accent, or contrast with it.
Try out your options and observe how different colors look throughout the day. Consider different angles and lighting and how that will affect the outcome. Observe the paint from various distances to get a feel for how it will be perceived from the street.
