Restoring Varnished Wood

Restoring Varnished Wood can be a tricky project to take on. If you want to DIY a piece of varnished wood in your home, you may not want to go through the hassle of sanding it down. Using a De-glosser, aka, a Liquid sander is the answer you’ve been searching for. This product will dull the finish and the varnished wood will be ready for priming. Here is how to use de-glosser properly and prime the varnished wood.

1. Using spray de-glosser – This is pretty self-explanatory but spray it on the varnished wood, wait the recommended time and then wipe it off with a rag. 
2. Use sander de-glosser – Pour this onto a rag and use circular motions to rub the varnish off of the surface.
3. Allow proper drying time.

If you are concerned about the chemicals in de-glossers, many suppliers now over Low-VOC options. This is a faster and less messy alternative to sanding.

Now that this step is finished its time to prime. If you think this step is a waste of time you may want to reconsider. Priming your varnished wood has many benefits some of which include:

• Seals off the underneath surface
• Stops the wood grain from showing through
• Helps achieve flawless adhesion between the wood and the paint
• Reduces the number of coats you will have to apply
• Will allow the paints true color to show rather than ending up with a sheer looking paint.

What primer should you use? 

• If you stop by your local hardwood store look for a multi-purpose primer. Ask the workers what the best choice for a varnished wood surface is. There are many different options some of which include: Stain-blocking primer, shellac primer, Oil-based or water-based primer. Make sure to pay attention to the color of the primer. White is good for white or pale color woods but will not work well on darker shades. You will need to tiny your primer and get it close to the color you will be painting your darker shade of varnished wood.
