Warehouse & Distribution Center Painting Project in Denver, Colorado

In January 2020, CertaPro Painters took on a challenging yet rewarding project at the Safeway Beverage manufacturing plant and distribution center in Denver, Colorado. This facility is a critical hub for producing a wide range of beverages, including water, soda, and sports drinks. With a three-day timeframe for each trip, our team was tasked with improving the safety and aesthetics of the warehouse floors, bollards, and more, all while ensuring minimal disruption to the plant’s day-to-day operations.

The Condition of the Facility

When we first arrived at the Safeway Beverage plant, the safety lines on the warehouse floors were in poor condition. The lines, which play an essential role in ensuring the safety of the plant workers, were heavily scuffed and faded. To make matters worse, the lines were inconsistently colored, with some areas marked in yellow and others in orange, creating a lack of uniformity. This inconsistency not only affected the appearance of the facility but also compromised the clarity of the safety markers for employees and equipment operators.

The walls of the facility also showed signs of wear and tear, with some areas requiring fresh paint to restore a clean, professional look. Our goal was to standardize the colors and give the facility a fresh, unified appearance while adhering to safety regulations.

Scope of the Project

The main focus of the project was to repaint the safety lines on the warehouse floors using specialized epoxy paint. Epoxy is ideal for this type of environment because it provides a durable, long-lasting finish that can withstand heavy foot traffic, forklifts, and other machinery. Along with the safety lines, our team was also tasked with painting bollards and performing minor touch-ups on the interior walls.

One of the key objectives of the project was to ensure that all safety lines were repainted in the correct safety yellow color, which is a standard across many industrial environments. By switching to a consistent yellow, we aimed to enhance visibility and safety throughout the plant.

Special Challenges

This project came with its own set of unique challenges. Because the Safeway Beverage plant operates continuously, we had to work around the facility’s downtime to minimize disruption to its operations. Our team scheduled the work during off-hours to allow ample time for the epoxy paint to cure before workers returned to their stations or equipment was used on the newly painted surfaces. The drying time was crucial, as driving or walking on the freshly painted areas before they were fully cured could have led to damage or the need for rework.

Specialized Techniques and Equipment

The use of specialized epoxy paint required specific knowledge and skills. Our team was well-versed in the preparation and application of epoxy coatings, which was essential to achieving a high-quality finish. Precision taping was also a key part of the process, ensuring that the safety lines were straight, evenly spaced, and clearly visible once the paint dried.

Another challenge was the time-sensitive nature of using epoxy paint. Once mixed, the epoxy has a limited window during which it can be applied before it begins to harden. This required our crew to work quickly and efficiently, ensuring that the paint was applied evenly and precisely within the time frame. Any delays in application would have resulted in wasted product and the need to start over.

The epoxy paint used for this project was chosen for its durability and resistance to the wear and tear typical of a high-traffic industrial facility. This type of paint is specifically formulated to stand up to the demands of a busy warehouse, providing a long-lasting finish that will not fade or scuff easily. However, its quick-drying nature meant our crew had to be diligent in their timing and application methods.

The fresh coat of paint on the walls and bollards added to the facility’s revitalized appearance. Workers and visitors alike could easily see the safety markers, and the standardized color scheme gave the plant a more cohesive, professional look. The durable epoxy paint will ensure that these improvements last for years to come, reducing the need for frequent maintenance and repainting.
