Summer House Painting – Painting Tips for Hot Weather
Posted on June 4, 2019
Summer has rolled into most of the country. The sun’s oppressive rays are in full swing. They can be too much for your skin, and definitely can be too much for your summer house painting job. Here are painting tips for hot weather.
It’s recommended by paint manufacturers to paint when temperatures are about 70 degrees. The humidity is supposed to be less than 50%. With that being said, there are paints on the market that can be used in more extreme temperatures and weather.
Temperature
Avoid the hottest times of day to paint. Do your work early in the morning or late in the evening when the sun isn’t shining as bright. If your job requires you to be on the roof, try to get up there first thing in the morning to avoid hot roofing.
Plan your paint job to avoid painting in direct sunlight. Your paint, and you, will thank you for it. Surfaces in direct sunlight can be as much as 15 degrees hotter than the ambient air.
Stay away from painting in the hottest months. The heat can cause the paint to dry too quickly and create bubbles and pockets within the finish.
Precipitation
If the day is predicted to be windy, put your paint off a day. Debris and dust can stick to wet paint, becoming one with the paint. Now you’ll get to look at that leaf for as long as your paint lasts.
Rain can help cool temperatures down. It also will add moisture to surfaces your painting. The finish of your paint, if put on a wet wall, will be ruined. It can cause issues with the surface by sealing the wet into the wall.
Use overcast days to get more work done. The hidden sun will allow you to work longer with fewer heat breaks without risking your health.
Humidity can make your dry time extend to nearly double between coats. The first coat will have a harder time drying into the wet air. Make sure you wait long enough between or your roller could peel up the first coat and cause a big mess.
Health
Take necessary precautions to paint in the heat. Avoid working in direct sunlight and during the hottest parts of the day. Wear protective hats, sleeves and other sun blocking clothing.
Drink more than you think you need. Once you are thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. Keep water and electrolyte drinks nearby for easy sipping.
Take breaks! During the hot times, take as many breaks as you need. The paint job can last days, but you won’t if you overheat yourself.
