6 Tips for Painting Your Virginia Home in Spring

1. Wash Before You Paint

Your paint job’s final look is directly tied to your preparation work that is put in. Take time to pressure wash the entire exterior of the house. This removes mildew, dirt, paint and more. Hold the washing wand at a 45-degree angle to clean the walls down. This gives your walls the best opportunity to accept new paint. For best finished jobs, do not add any soap or cleaners. Hold the wand steady and be careful not to cause craters or dings in the exterior material of the house. 

2. Sand the Surface

Once the power washing has completely dried, sanding is most likely in order. Take off the finish of the old paint that allows proper adhesion of the new paint. You can also smooth out imperfections and address any siding or walls that need repairs before the next step.

3. Choice the Right Colors

Color choice is important when you are looking to hide potential issues within the paint of your house. You’ll want a color that appeals to you and provides a long-lasting and dirt-hiding color. Traditional choices include grey, white, yellow and light blue. Trim the house with a complementary color for the best outcome. 

Use Samples

Never start painting without working on a sample area first. Paint patches of each option you like on the side of your home. They should be at least two feet by two feet to give you a proper area to make an informed choice. Check the colors in different daylights and against any trim, fascia or flora around your house. 

4. Make the Job Last

When you go to purchase your paint, ask if it includes a sealant in it. If not, consider a separate one. This is particularly helpful in Arlington climates with excessive sun, wind, and rain. It will help your paint last longer by acting as a top coat against knicks, chips and color leaching. 

5. Extend the Job
