Ceiling Painting Tips and Tricks
Posted on June 8, 2021
There are so many benefits to painting your ceiling. A proper coat of paint can make a room feel larger, cozier, or warmer depending on what color you choose. It is called the fifth wall for a reason! Unfortunately, most homeowners are not aware of all the benefits ceiling painting provides. And if they do, they see the task as daunting and ultimately unattainable. Our professional painters are here to set the record straight about ceiling painting: anyone with the right knowledge can do it!
The professionals at CertaPro Painters compiled a list of our top three ceiling painting tips and tricks to make your paint job as easy as possible. Our tried and true practice has helped thousands of homeowners create the homes of their dreams––you could be next!
Prep the Room
The first step to getting a great ceiling finish is to do the proper preparation work. Ultimately, there isn’t much difference between painting a ceiling and painting a wall. Protect your furniture with tarps, wear the proper safety equipment, and clean the surface well. Because of the nature of the job, you will want to put down more drop cloths than you would for a simple wall painting. You may also want to wear a hat so paint does not drip into your hair! Tape is also going to be your best friend. Use painter’s tape to cover the tops of walls where the crown molding is. You will also want to take down the drop cloths on the floor to avoid accidents.
Use the Right Paint
This may sound like a simple task, but with so many options and options out there, it can be hard to know which paint is the right paint for your project. No worries, we’re here to help. The first step is to look specially for ceiling paint. If you can find a ceiling paint that includes paint and primer in one, you’ll be in even better shape.
You’ll also want to make sure you’re buying the right paint color for the room you’re painting. White paint can brighten rooms that don’t have much natural light, but a room with high ceilings may benefit from a cozier, darker color. If you’re not sure which type of ceiling paint or ceiling paint color is right for you, get in touch with the professionals.
Apply Paint the Right Way
Our third and last step is to apply paint the right way. This includes reading the directions on your paint can and using all the right materials. If you have textured ceilings, you’ll need a roller that can work on that material. When it comes to applying the paint itself, work with “W” or “M” shapes to avoid streaking. Remember to do a test area to check materials and technique before you dive right into the middle of the ceiling!
