Painting your Home? Here’s What You Need to Know

Posted on March 24, 2020

Picking the paint color for your house can be a daunting task. Not only are there tons of color options, you also have to think about different shades and finishes. Everyone has different life-styles so everyone’s personal preferences are different. To help make the process a little less stressful we put together a list of things to consider when it comes to selecting the right paint and color for your home.

Oil or Latex?

Latex is the more common option due to the fact that it is easier to clean and more durable. It also lasts longer. So when should you choose oil paint? Oil paint works well for trims of moldings. A popular tactic is to use oil-based paint primer and then go over it with latex paint.

High-Gloss, Semi-Gloss Matte Sheen?

The glossier the easier it is to clean, it will generally wipe clean with a damp cloth. If you are a person with small children in the household you will probably want to go with a glossier paint especially in frequently used rooms like the living room, playroom, and kitchen. High-gloss also looks good on the trim because it gives it a more finished and polished look.

Semi-gloss, as you might imagine, is less glossy and harder to clean than the high-gloss paints. It is however a cheaper alternative and many people use this in their homes and have no complaints.

Matte paint is best for people dealing with a lot of imperfections on their walls. It is however the hardest to clean and will show more dirt than the high-gloss and semi-gloss options. Eggshell is the most popular option for hiding imperfections.

Selecting the Color

When it comes to selecting the color there are a couple main factors to consider:

  • Are you planning on selling your home in the near future? If so, keep the walls white to allow potential buyers to create their own vision of them living in the home.
  • Decide if you want a warm tone or a cool one. This will help narrow down your options.
  • Decide upon the style you want to go for.
  • Look up inspiration pictures online and narrow those down into your top 5. This makes your decision a lot narrower and easier.
