Barbie Dorsey is the owner of CertaPro Painters, which\u00a0provides residential and commercial painting Servicing\u00a0Wilmington\u2014New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender Counties.\u00a0To provide customers with a worry-free painting experience,\u00a0CertaPro Painters\u00ae develops a customized project plan that is\u00a0complete with safety and cleaning guidelines.<\/p>\n

What made you realize you wanted to start a business?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My past encompasses everything from leading teams and\u00a0Land Development; to interior design and commercial design…I\u00a0realized I was protecting everyone\u2019s business as if it was my own.\u00a0Over the years, I realized that I needed to do this for myself…run\u00a0a business, own a business and create a culture. It goes back to\u00a0about 2005, I was looking into painting my home and after doing\u00a0my due diligence I came upon the CertaPro Painters\u00ae brand. It\u00a0was an easy, good guy family company. I had a great experience\u00a0and, fast forward to 2011, I ended up joining their team, running\u00a0residential and commercial sales for 8 years. That was the\u00a0catalyst for me opening CertaPro Painters\u00ae in Wilmington.<\/p>\n

Do you have a secret sauce for hiring and\/or retention?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"I never lose sight of the fact that I\u2019m not producing the work;\u00a0somebody on my team is producing the work. So, my role is\u00a0hiring the labor and getting to know them. When you start a\u00a0business, you create your own mission and culture. The biggest\u00a0thing has been speaking to the crews, understanding their\u00a0needs and goals, letting them know that I\u2019m not working for\u00a0you and you\u2019re not working for me, we\u2019re working together.\u00a0That\u2019s essential because ultimately, they are the last point\u00a0of contact for our customers. Speaking with intention,\u00a0passion and conviction is also essential, because in this male\u00a0saturated industry, I\u2019ve learned a lot from being open, listening\u00a0and not talking so much …basically just understanding who\u2019s\u00a0there to support you. It\u2019s not easy all the time being in these\u00a0businesses, but I think it\u2019s important to have fun and remember\u00a0your why. It\u2019s important to build your brand, to inspire your\u00a0crews and your customers, so can you can create that culture.<\/p>\n

What does success mean for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Part of success for me is finally having a NAWIC chapter here\u00a0in Wilmington. It\u2019s fabulous that we can all get together and be\u00a0supportive colleagues to each other. For me, delivering on my\u00a0promises is paramount. Doing what you say you will do is not\u00a0always easy, but when the team delivers on time because of\u00a0the culture you created, it\u2019s a great feeling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
