What is Masonite?

Before we get into the details of painting masonite, we need to have a firm understanding of what masonite is. In short, masonite is a type of hardboard, or engineered wood. Other names for it include Quartrboard, Isorel, and pressboard. The material was patented in 1924 by William H. Mason.

To create masonite, wood chips are disintegrated with steam. When released, the fibers then bond to lignin fibers in wood. The result is a dense and stable material with high bendability. The material is most popularly used on home exteriors and doors.

Common Masonite Problems

Just like with any surface, masonite has its problems. There are certain things you need to keep an eye out for if your home is made of masonite siding. The most popular problems include:

  • Rotting: Masonite is not known for being a material that can withstand harsh weather conditions. It is especially susceptible to moisture. If water infiltrates the siding, the wood will begin to rot and decay over time.
  • Mold/Mildew: Because masonite holds onto this moisture, there can also be problems with mold and mildew. This can cause stains on the exterior of your walls. If you have this problem, it is best to get it checked by the experts. It may have infiltrated the interior of your home.
  • Discoloration: Discoloration is a problem with any home exterior. Masonite may need more upkeep than the typical home, however. It is important to review the exterior of your home frequently to stay updated with any discoloration issues.

Tips for Painting Your Masonite

If your masonite isn’t experiencing any of the above problems, you’re in a good place to get to painting. The good news is that this should only have to happen about once every 10-15 years. Each time you paint, though, make sure you take your preparation work seriously. Masonite often requires a good sanding job before any materials are applied. Remember to wear gloves and a mask if you are going to take this on by yourself. You should also use a coat of primer. Be sure to use the tip of your brush to get into all of the crevices of the masonite.
