Choosing the correct paint for garage door painting is, by far, the most common mistake people make when they paint a garage door. The kind of paint you should use depends on the material your garage door is made out of. Locate\u00a0one of the stickers<\/a>\u00a0on the inside of your door to determine what material your garage door is made from.<\/p>\n

Vinyl Garage Doors<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For this common type of garage door, the best paint to use is a latex exterior. Oil-based paints are not recommended for this material type, as the\u00a0vinyl material<\/a>\u00a0won\u2019t allow the paint to adhere to its surface.<\/p>\n

Wood Garage Doors<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For this material, we recommend latex exterior paint. When you\u2019re painting a wooden garage door, it\u2019s important to consider its natural color, what color you are aiming for, and if it has been painted previously. If the wood is bare, you will need to apply a stain-blocking primer if you\u2019re going with a color that is lighter than its natural color. If painted previously, you will need to complete an additional step to prep the door for painting. But don\u2019t worry! We\u2019ll make sure to cover this extra step in a later section.<\/p>\n

Metal Garage Doors<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Acrylic or\u00a0Direct-to-Metal exterior paint<\/a>\u00a0is the best choice for metal doors. If your metal door has areas of rust, it\u2019s important to prime the area with a\u00a0rust inhibiting primer<\/a>\u00a0first for better coverage. It\u2019s recommended to use a higher grade paint with a satin finish to ensure color retention.<\/p>\n
