It’s time to paint the exterior of your home. You know it has to be done, but you’re wondering if there are any exterior house painting special tips you should know before getting started.
Tips for Exterior House Painting
Well, you’re in luck – since we are the painting experts in the San Antonio area, we’re going to help you out.
Stalk the Weather
The last thing you want is to have rain ruin your exterior house painting job. Don’t just trust the weatherman when trying to figure out if it’s going to rain. Look at the radar. If you see green anywhere near where you are located, don’t paint. If not, you’re clear to go.
You need at least 24 to 48 hours for the paint to dry before rain can pound down on it without effect. Make sure you choose the paint day wisely.
Get the Supplies
You’ll need:
- Paint Brushes
- Paint
- Drop Clothes
- Edgers
- Rollers
- Ladder
- … a lot of patience.
This is not going to be a quick job – unless you don’t want it to look nice. Be prepared to spend hours painting the exterior of your house. It will take longer if you have to primer it first.
It’s important to have everything you need before getting started. If you don’t have enough paint, you run the risk of having part of your house dry and the other part wet, which could show lines on it or end up with different shades on the house.
The neighbors will notice. You will notice. It won’t make you happy.
Paint One Coat and Then Another Coat
The best way to paint evenly is to paint the house with one coat of paint, and then go around and paint the second coat. It should be done in one day, so you may need to hustle if your house is big.
This is the reason why we have a team of exterior house painters. They can tackle the entire house and get the second coat done with no time issues.
Edge First or Last
It’s up to you if you want to edge first or last. Some people prefer getting it out of the way since it’s not their favorite part of the painting. Others decide to wait until they are done with the rolling part.
Just be sure that it also gets two coats of paint, so it all looks seamless.
Ask for Help
It’s really a huge job to do it alone. It’s better when you have some buddies helping you out. Most people don’t want to do it, so be prepared for rejection. You can bribe them with pizza, beer, or cold hard cash, but know that many times those enticing offers don’t always work.
