The Task:

The customer wanted to remove the popcorn texture from the ceilings in the main living area so they reach out to CertaPro Painters of Minneapolis South & St. Louis Park to get the job done. This is a very labor-intense process that includes damping the surface to soften the texture, scraping to remove as much texture as possible, skim coating all areas to obtain a smooth finish, sanding after skim coating and painting. Typically, two coats of drywall mud (skim coating) are necessary to obtain a smooth finish sanding after every application. Other options to smooth finish are knock down texture or orange peel.

The Work:

Our team began the project by damping the ceiling surface to soften the existing popcorn texture. This is crucial, as it makes the removal of the texture much easier and less damaging to the underlying drywall. Once the surface is sufficiently damp, the next step involves scraping off as much of the texture as possible. After the texture is scraped off, the next step is applying a layer of skim coating. This is done to cover any remaining imperfections, creating a smooth and even surface across the entire ceiling. Typically, two coats of drywall mud are needed to achieve the desired smoothness. Once the final coat of mud has been applied and sanded, the ceiling is then prepared for painting. The painting stage not only provides a clean and polished look but it also helps seal and protect the new finish.

Final Results:

With the help of CertaPro Painters of Minneapolis South & St. Louis Park, the ceiling no longer has an outdated popcorn texture. The smooth surface provides a more contemporary look, enhancing the overall appearance of the room. By the end of the process, the customer will have a beautifully transformed ceiling in Minneapolis.
