Posted on February 12, 2022

You never want to try to mix wetness and paint. Because of this, there are few rooms more difficult to paint than a bathroom. Mix in some immobile appliances and cramped spaces and your project is sure to fail. Do-it-yourselfers are sure to shake their heads and wonder how painting this room is possible. Before you give up, our pros are here to help. Here are bathroom painting tips from CertaPro Painters®.

Preparation is Vital

Painting a wet room is impossible. In a room that is plagued by humidity and dampness, how do you start? Dry it out. Exile users to other bathrooms for a solid couple of days to allow the moisture to evaporate and clear out. While this time is passing, it is time to get to work. As a room that is typically filled with things like conditioner and shaving cream, messes are abundant. You will need to take to the walls several times. First, use a dry towel, broom or vacuum nozzle to remove dust and lint. Then move to a wet mixture of TSP to remove soap and scum residue from the walls. After all this is done, you’ll probably need to give it a few more days to dry the area fully.

Not All Paints are Equal

One of the most important parts to creating a perfect bathroom finish is to carefully choose the right paint. And no, we’re not just talking about color! You’ll want to keep the sheen (level of gloss) at the forefront of your mind. We recommend an eggshell or semi-gloss product for bathrooms in particular.

On top of this, you’ll want to check if the paint you want is mold or mildew resistant. There’s a lot that goes on in bathrooms, and you can usually count on a good amount of steam––especially in smaller spaces. Doing this extra step of research can give you peace of mind that these nasty growths will stay out of your home.

Don’t Forget the Tank

Painting around appliances like toilets and tubs can be very time-consuming. Make your bathroom painting job a little easier by removing the toilet tank. This frees up the part of the wall where it’s closest to the wall.

To take the tank off, turn off the water at the base. Flush it to remove the water currently in the tank. It’s a good idea to place some towels around the toilet on the floor to catch any remaining water. Unscrew the tank and pull it off. You can store it until the paint job is complete and dried.
