Renovation Ideas for Home Basement

Posted on October 18, 2020

If you’ve been playing with the idea of giving your basement a makeover, there are plenty of ways you could go about it. Whether you go practical with storage space or build the home office you’ve always looked forward to, here are a few ideas for renovations that can transform your basement.

Home Office

A lot of us are finding ourselves working from home lately. And while a kitchen counter can do for a while, having a dedicated space for your home office can help give you the focus and productivity you need.

Second Living Room

Better than having one place where you can relax is having two. A second living room in your basement gives you the option of having a formal living room upstairs for guests and informal space for family time downstairs.

Bar

If you’re looking less to relax and more to entertain, then a bar might be the way to go with your basement. Whether it’s in the theme of your favorite sports team, or decked out in the swankiest vintage or modern decor, you can make your home bar in your basement the place to be with a few coats of paint (or some elegant wallpaper), fridge and counter space to make drinks, and plenty of room to socialize.

Tip: Michigan mostly has basements with a concrete foundation, consisting of porous material, so make sure you use a masonry waterproofing paint or sealant underneath. Before you add a pop of color, first seal out any moisture that could seep through your walls and cause damages.

Spare Bedroom

Whether it’s siblings outgrowing each other, or family and friends that come to visit often, an extra room can always come in handy. A private, spacious area away from the house can be perfect for an accommodating, and restful area. You may just want it for yourself!

Master Bedroom

Although it’s unusual, it’s not unheard of to turn a basement into a master bedroom. If it’s adequately sized, it can make the perfect and restful sanctuary to come home to every night, away from the rest of the mess and noise upstairs.

Small Apartment

By adding a kitchenette and bathroom downstairs, you can make a completely independent apartment space, considering there is a direct exit outdoors as well. This can be perfect if you have a kid in college or family you’re lending extra space to, or you may even be able to rent the extra space for some additional monthly income.

Tip: Basements tend to have less natural lighting and therefore its advisable to be aware of how the right color on the walls can affect how big or small the space may feel. While choosing light tones, you may also want to consider glass bead wallpaper, which uses small glass beads that have been attached to the surface, creating an elegant look that catches the light. Schedule a professional color consultant appointment to pick the perfect wall colors for your basement.

Home Gym

A basement can provide ample space to build a gym custom-built for your preferences and needs. You can even section off different areas for separate workouts, from yoga to machinery, to free weights to really get you sweating.

Home Theater

Since you don’t get as much lighting from outside, a basement can be the perfect place to put a home theater. Investing in some recessed lighting, a projector, and some comfortable chairs can transform a drabby basement into a full on movie-going experience.

Tip: Stucco is typically used for exterior walls, as a durable guard against the elements. But when it’s used on interior walls, however, stucco’s rugged finish can give your basement depth, warmth, and quite a bit of character.
