Hiring a Painting Contractor

Posted on January 28, 2020

Bringing contractors into your home can sometimes be stressful. Your daily routine gets broken apart, and might last for several days. There are horror stories of disappearing contractors, mid-job damage or worse. Avoid these situations with some sage advice to set you up for success.

Here’s what you want to consider when hiring a painting contractor in the DeSoto, TX area.

Contractors have a language only they seem to completely understand. While all the jargon is thrown around, it’s easy to get lost in translation. Before setting up your estimates, let’s look at the important terms you should understand.

Bonding

Bonding is a policy that each contractor should carry. It covers the homeowner if the contractor or his work fails in any way. If permitting is skipped, the job is left unfinished or the crew and supply bills aren’t paid, this policy will step in. Any contractor that is not bonded could put you in a position where you are on the hook for these issues.

In your first encounter with contractors, as very specifically if they are bonded. A reputable company will be happy to provide you their bond number and certificate of status. That is what you need to feel confident moving forward with them.

City and county governments set the bonding requirements for each contractor. Your local government outlet is a good place to start looking for any further information. They will be able to tell you what is covered and what is required for the contractor to be covered.

Insurance

Insurance is an absolute requirement with contractors working in your home. Verify your chosen provider has both liability and worker’s compensation insurance policies.

Liability insurance will cover any accident damage during the course of the work provided in your home. Accidents happen, and this policy covers it. If the work is just questionable or substandard, you’ll need to refer to the bonding.

Worker’s compensation insurance is used to cover the crew in your home. If they are accidentally injured and go without pay due to the injury, this policy is used. Without this coverage, a homeowner could be expected to cover the lost wages and medical care required.

Licensing

Your last question should be about licensing. State and local governments have their own requirements for licensure of painters and contractors. Visit your local government websites for further direction.
