Before the arrival of the Pilgrims in 1620, Cape Cod had been home to indigenous peoples who had called this area Pamet or Payomet. The area known as \u201cCorn Hill\u201d is said to have been the site of the unfortunate first encounter between the Payomet tribesmen and the English newcomers who had discovered and stolen their winter store of corn. Later meetings would be more peaceful.<\/p>\n

In1709, Truro was incorporated as a town and, isolated from the rest of the Cape by marshland, Truro remained a relatively quiet hamlet for years. Its rolling highlands were good for farming and pastures; and small ship-building, fishing and saltworks prospered. Changes in the shoreline brought an end to shipbuilding in the mid 19th century, and Truro began to shrink in population. However, with the arrival of the railroads, Truro began to thrive as a summer tourist destination. This was even further enhanced by the straightening of Route 6 and the creation of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Nearly two-thirds of Truro\u2019s land is protected within the National Seashore, preserving its windswept highlands, sandy beaches and acres of scenic marshland in pristine condition for generations of visitors to come.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
