Located at the very tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown has a unique place in the history of the area. In 1620, the Pilgrims signed the Mayflower Compact as their ship lay anchored in Provincetown harbor. Although they chose to settle in Plymouth, the new settlers recognized the many benefits of Provincetown, including its valuable fishing grounds and what was then considered to be the best harbor on the East Coast. In 1654, the Governor of Plymouth purchased the land then called \u201cCape Cod\u201d from the Native Americans. Later renamed the \u201cProvince Lands,\u201d the area was kept for the benefit of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which used the fees from leased fishing rights to fund education and other projects.<\/p>\n

The area was again renamed when it was incorporated as \u201cProvincetown\u201d in 1727. Following the American Revolution, the town expanded rapidly as a fishing and whaling center, and attracted an influx of Portugese fishermen who came to live in the area. As early as the late 1800\u2019s, Provincetown came to be know as a thriving center for artists and writers, and began to grow in popularity as a summer tourist destination. Institutions such as the Provincetown Players and the Cape Cod School of Art attracted actors, writers and artists from all across the country. This artistic environment attracted \u2018hippies\u2019 and other free-spirits in the 1960\u2019s who came to stay and raise families in \u201cP\u2019town.\u201d As early as the late 20th century, there had been a significant gay presence in town, which grew significantly in the 1970\u2019s. Today, Provincetown may be the best known gay summer resort on the East Coast and has the highest rate of same sex couples in the country.<\/p>\n

The many charms of Provincetown include its truly unique one-of-a shops, restaurants and cafes, beautifully-maintained inns and bed and breakfasts, and the largest collection of art galleries on the Cape. The town is blessed with a diverse variety of architecture including old Captains\u2019 houses along Commercial Street, sleek contemporary homes along the beach and perched in the hills, and truly marvelous gardens behind its gates and along its narrow lanes. In addition, there is the untouched splendor of nature all around the town, from the \u201cProvincelands\u201d to the north, to Race Point to the east, to Woods End and Long Point to the south.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
