Painting

Aquinas – Metal Lunchroom Ceiling

Posted on May 17, 2022

Project Description
Acquinas was having major adhesion problems with the corrugated metal ceiling in their high school cafeteria. They needed help with paint remediation as their existing ceiling paint was peeling and sagging. As they had an exposed ceiling, they needed a repaint on their MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) which included sprinkler piping and ductwork.

Special Challenges
We were concerned about the extent of the peeling on their galvanized metal deck which was a relatively new cafeteria. Our diagnosis was that the metal was never neutralized by the builders to allow the paint to adhere properly. Because too much milledge was applied in one coat, the paint started to sag and delaminate. Accessing the ceiling structures was also a challenge that required specialized scissor lifts that needed to meet specific dimensions to allow for entry.

Scope of Work
The project took place over Christmas Break 2021 and took two weeks from start to finish. Because of the short break where no students would be present, we accelerated the completion of the project to two weeks. We covered and protected the floors so that we could use our scissor lifts to remove the peeling paint. From there, we applied specialized DTM primers to all exposed features and repainted them to match using the dryfall industrial ceiling paint.
